Roger is from Otahuhu, which has no equal in the world as a suburb-village producing captains in a national sport. Streets ahead of the rest of the world, with 5 captains of the Kiwi rugby league team in the last 50 years: F R Christian, M Graham, H McGahan, R Barnett and R Wiki.

But no Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. Yet. He's captained the Warriors, been the Dally M Player of the Year and twice the Dally M Fullback of the Year. There's a Rugby League World Cup planned for November this year and probably RTS' last chance to make it 6 national captains from Otahuhu.

Good on him for leaving the Warriors. The culture there has become quite ugly, top heavy with Australians like coach Nathan Brown, C E O Cameron George and other coaching staff.

The NZ Warriors messed up badly when they let the great Auckland coach John Ackland go, after his 2 NRL premiership wins with the Junior Warriors in 2010 and 2011. And another very talented coach, Otahuhu's Richie Blackmore, who took the NZ Warriors reserves to an NRL Grand Final in 2011.

I've long maintained that the best thing about the NZ Warriors is the opportunity for youths to earn good money and live in foreign lands. Heaps of Otahuhu boys have bounced from the Warriors to Australia or England..

Sad that RTS may not provide Otahuhu with another national captain, but he has an ambition to make the All Blacks for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. I've already noted many pluses for the All Blacks in October 2023, but not R Tuivasa-Sheck.

'Twas on this day 50 years that I arrived in Wellington to start my first job in horse racing.

I was 16 and knew one person in Wellington---- NZ Racing Conference secretary Tony Algie, who had interviewed me in Auckland 5 weeks earlier.

It was meant to be. Mid-December 1970 mother finally kicked me out. 2 years earlier she became separated and moved from Northland to Auckland and the positives for me were exiting boarding school. 2.3 years of Mt Albert Grammar discipline had been very restrictive and I was stoked to become a day boy.

But suddenly I was homeless. I had tried unsuccessfully to get into racing journalism in Auckland so the desperation inspired a letter to Mr Algie to see if he had any ideas.

Definitely. An increased workload at NZ racing's headquarters brought the need for a junior clerk. A meeting at Ellerslie racecourse on January 2 convinced Mr Algie ( holidaying in Auckland ) that I fitted the bill and he even offered to find me private board, with a family in Brooklyn.

The initial homesickness was solved by a female workmate introducing me to her hometown, Otaki. Every weekend there for nearly 2 years, helping a couple of horse trainers and learning more about the fascinating people in the industry.

After 2 years the Racing Conference moved me on. Menial work for a few months, then a chance pub meeting in Wellington alerted me to a cadet reporter's position becoming available in the NZ Herald racing department in Auckland !

A letter, a phone call and a dash back home got me the job that lasted for 3.9 years. More learning, including many horses getting pulled up before being set for the punt. Placing bets for jockeys, often on race rivals and I decided to spend the next 40 years doing this job and being famous with a byline in the paper every day !

NZ Herald had other ideas, and I went to Australia in 1977. A variety of jobs in 4 years, with only 5 months work in Melbourne stables having anything to do with horse racing. Which confirmed that unless you were right in with trainers and jockeys, there wasn't much reason to bet......

I left NZ for England in April 1981 and a job riding polo ponies in training in Berkshire led to my meeting an Astrologeress in London. Fate again.

That was life changing. Ms Astrologeress' analysis of my character and past was amazing. I picked her brain and began studying, analysing everyone I could then got brave enough to predict a very lucky day for myself.

2020 has brought much laughter and many mockables. But also some disappointments.
